Front Door Security Check by our Cheltenham Locksmith

Discovering you have had a break-in is a very traumatic experience and the effect it has on you can last long after the whole ordeal is over. This is why our team at MP Locksmiths in Cheltenham have put together a helpful guide to help you improve the overall security of your front door so that you have the best possible defence against burglary.

Lock Upgrades

One of the most substantial security measures you can put in place is having a good secure lock on your front door. You should look at your door locks and check for any signs of damage or wear, age and quality.

If your lock doesn’t meet BS3621 for wooden doors or TS007 for UPVC doors or is damaged, then it is definitely time to have your locks upgraded. This will not only improve the security of your front door, but you may also find that it reduces your home insurance premiums, as well as the new locks you have installed, will be insurance approved.

Shockingly, there are millions of UK homes that still have sub-standard locks, and if one of these properties were to be broken into then the homeowner could find that their insurance company won’t be willing to pay out on a claim, as the locks did not meet their minimum requirements.

Strengthen Door and Door Frame

Even the best most secure lock on the market is practically useless if your door frame is weak. Wooden doors in particular are susceptible to weak frames, therefore, making it easy for an intruder to force entry.

A good way to reinforce your wooden door is to have a strike plate installed. This is a metal plate that is attached to your door using long metal screws that are drilled into the studs. You can purchase strike plates from most DIY shops, however, if you don’t feel confident with your DIY skills then you can contact your local locksmith who will be able to ensure it is correctly installed.

You should also check that your door frame is properly screwed down, if your door frame is loose then it leaves it vulnerable to being kicked of the hinges leaving the overall security of your door weak. Your door frame can also be reinforced with hinge bots which have been specifically designed to stop the door from being kicked off its hinges.

Have A Deadbolt Installed

A deadbolt can significantly improve the overall security of your door. There are many different types of deadbolt available all varying in size and strength it might be worth having a chat with your local locksmith to find out which one will suit your door and needs best. When installing a deadbolt, it is vital that the bolt extends deep into the door frame so that they work well when stopping the door from being forced open. Again, if you don’t feel confident installing one yourself then you should call your local locksmith to come and install it for you.
